Celebration of Life Graveside

Tri-City resident Joanne Killand, 88, was born in the mid-west to Emily and Bernard Jerman at the beginning of the Great Depression and passed away on July 7th, 2019. She lived her early years in the mid-west, moving to Richland in the late 1940’s.  She attended Columbia High School in Richland.  She married her high school sweetheart, Wayne, in Richland in the early 1950’s.

Joanne worked for the Richland School District and later worked on the Hanford Site, retiring in the late 1980s.  She volunteered at her church as a Sunday School teacher, church librarian, and church council member.  Joanne enjoyed traveling (visiting all fifty states), cross stitching, and playing bridge with the same lady’s group for over fifty years. She volunteered as a Cub Scout Den Mother and visiting nursing homes.

Joanne was preceded in death by her husband Wayne, parents, one sister and one brother.  She is survived by her children - Bruce (wife Tommye), Lori, and Brian (wife Kathy); five grandchildren and their spouses, and eight great-grandchildren, along with numerous extended family.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 11, 2019 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Einan’s at Sunset in the Chapel.  A family graveside service will take place at Sunset Memorial Gardens.  A memorial service will be held Friday, July 12, 2019 at 11:00 am at Richland Lutheran church.  Donations may be made to Richland Lutheran Church’s Good New Media Ministry or the Tri-City Chaplaincy’s Hospice program.

  • I grew up with Richland Lutheran being at the heart of my family’s life. (My parent & sisters were charter members, years before I was born). So naturally Mr. & Mrs. Killand were well-known to me — a part of our church family. Both were kind & caring people. I’m sorry that your family has had to say goodbye to both within such a short time. But I am glad that neither is here, longing for the other after so many years together. May each family member & loved one be granted the gifts of comfort & peace of mind & heart, knowing that we will see them again.

  • Joanne was one of my favorite Sunday School teachers! I have missed seeing Joanne and Wayne sitting in their "spot" in church when I am attending RLC with Dad. Always smiling with friendly hugs....I can't imagine what you all are feeling, losing both of them in such a short time. They were lovely people! Please know that you are thought of with love during this difficult time. Take comfort in God's peace, until we are all together in Paradise.

  • So sorry for yet another loss, Brian and family. I remember your mom as an administrative/office assistant/clerk at Chief Joseph Junior High. Always very kind and pleasant...a calm presence in a world of teenagers. Thoughts and prayers in your losing mom and dad.

  • I am so sorry to hear of the loss of both of your parents so close together. I have fond memories of your Mom from many years ago at RLC and their house on Sanford. They were good Norwegians! My thoughts and prayers will be with you all.

  • I and my Boy Scout friends spent many happy hours at the Killand house; Joanne was always gentle and welcoming, even in the face of a patrol of adolescent goons (as we were). Rest well.

  • I knew Joanne & Wayne at Good Shepherd. My husband & I visited them once when Joanne had shingles. We had gone to give her encouragement and she ended up encouraging us! I'm so glad to know they are both with their Lord Jesus, whom they loved so much.
