Celebration of Life

Johnson, Irene Alice

On Thursday, December 27, 2018, Irene Johnson, wife, mother, and sister, passed away suddenly at the age of 82 years. Irene will be forever remembered by her daughter, Kristi Nelson, son-in-law, Ethan Nelson, and grandsons Grant and Mason Nelson and by her brothers and sisters Emanuel Hintz, Lucille Raymond, Bernice Brinson, Ray Hintz and Susie Luther and her brother-in-law, Leif Johnson.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Lee Johnson, her sister, Mae McClain, and brother Elmer Hintz. Irene will also be forever remembered by her numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and dear friends.

Irene was born in Elgin, North Dakota, and grew up on the family farm in Mabton, Washington.  She was the oldest daughter and was like a mother to many of her brothers and sisters.  She was a natural organizer and planner.  She volunteered for the Richland Police Department for over 12 years and taught a citizenship class at the West Side Church in Richland.  She always took great pride in helping people become US Citizens and would often attend their citizenship ceremonies.  She was a dedicated card player, bowler, and an active member of the Kosmos Over 50 Singles Group.  Irene loved to entertain and was very generous with her time.  And most of all she was a devoted mother and grandmother, stocking her house with her grandkids’ favorite treats, having running cribbage games with them for quarters, and attending all their sporting events. She will have a place in our hearts forever.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, January 5, at 3:00 p.m., at Einans Event Center, 915 Bypass Highway, Richland, Washington.

  • Happy Birthday my friend. We always celebrated our birthdays together, being 1 month apart, the 24th as you would say is our number. I miss you so much, am still in shock. Irene you were a true friend to me. I will miss our spare of the moment lets go times, when we'd spend the day together, and how I'd always tell you to turn on and answer your cell phone so people (Kristi) won't worry. Prayers to Kristi, Ethan, Grant & Mason, you were blessed with her love, and I was blessed with her friendship.

  • I will always remember Irene's patience and giving of her time as she helped me get started on my families genealogy. We will never forget the generous invitation that she and Lee offered to us to spend Thanksgiving dinner with them. We had mutual friends of of theirs, whose son married their daughter. We will always remember her as a very generous, friendly person, and she will be missed by many.

  • I had the pleasure of meeting Irene socially a dozen or so time over the years and my wife and I would run in to her at Freddie’s shopping. She had a gift of humor and laughter and I enjoyed watching her toy with her son in law like a cat with a big ball of yarn... her eyes sparkling… and always… the smile of her soul. May Irene rest in the peace of God’s Love. Many prayers to the Nelson Family in this time of remembrance, grief, love and Joy. Gods Peace

  • Irene always had the coffee on when we were neighbors for thirty-three years. We spent many holidays together as family. We played cards together, and shared the fire pit for hot dog roasts. We watched our children grow through graduations, weddings, and baby showers. Then there was retirement, and upon the passing of our husbands, we traveled. I will cherish those memories forever. • I had the pleasure of working with Irene at the Richland Police Department. She was one of our VIPS. I so enjoyed her wit, friendly smile and her love for people, I attended a fingerprint class through the police department in Connell. She insisted on driving us to the class. Her and I sat next to each other in class. We got into trouble during class because we were talking too much. That was just her. She was always having fun no matter what she was doing. I am so saddened by her sudden passing and she will be SO MISSED by those of us at Richland Police Department. Rest in Peace my friend. Until we meet again. Danette

  • My condolences to Irene's family. She was a very special person. Our Kosmos Over 50 Singles group will miss her very much. She opened her home many times for our events - cooking our annual St. Patrick's Day dinner, organizing bowling days, game nights and helping with many additional activities. The community is much poorer without Irene and her contributions.

  • Our sincere condolences go out to all of Irene's family. She was a very gracious person and always fun to work with and to be around. She served in many important capacities within the Volunteers In Police Services and will be sadly missed by all of her fellow VIPS and by her many friends within the Richland Police Department.
